Western Film WTF

THE TERROR OF TINY TOWN (1938)
The first (and last) all-midget musical western is a rather typical Poverty Row oater that just happens to have a cast of little people.

TEXAS STRIP (1944) AND WHIP IT (1980)
Two short movies showing a man using a bullwhip to undress a woman.

LA NAVE DE LOS MONSTRUOS (THE SHIP OF MONSTERS) (1960)
A 1960 Mexican film in which two beauty queen space aliens with a ship full of hideous aliens crash in Mexico and fall in love with a singing cowboy. A weird, weird film that also happens to be incredibly charming.

WILD GALS OF THE NAKED WEST (1962)
Russ Meyer tackles the Western and produces a series of live action bawdy cocktail napkins.

THE NASTY RABBIT (1964)
A film by the father-son B-movie team of Arch Hall Sr. and Jr., about a group of spies that converge on a ranch to stop a Russian scheme to poison America with a talking rabbit.

DJANGO KILL... IF YOU LIVE, SHOOT! (1967)
The inspiration for Alex Cox's "Straight to Hell" is an enjoyably chaotic, utterly bananas vision of Western sadism and random violence.

LONESOME COWBOYS (1968)
Andy Warhol's Western movie, featuring attractive young men on drugs, underground gay artists on drugs, and superstar Viva discussing Catholicism.

BLAZE GLORY (1969)
An astonish short movie that takes place in a world that doesn't have horses, but everyone behaves like it does.

BUFFALO RIDER (1978)
A somewhat incompetently made film that nonetheless features the breathtaking central image of a man rising a bison like a horse.

LUST IN THE DUST (1985)
Paul Bartel attempted to make a John Waters film, with John Waters' cast, in the desert, and failed.

STRAIGHT TO HELL (1986)
Alex Cox and a bunch of punk rockers went to Spain to make a coffee-fueled remake of a Spaghetti Western, and succeed.

PET SHOP (1994)
Aliens come to earth dressed as cowboys and open a pet store in a complicated scheme to kidnap children.

OBLIVION (1994)
A satiric mash-up between Westerns and science fiction films, this is directed and acted so broadly as to become genuinely bizarre.

THE COWBOY AND THE FRENCHMAN (1988)
A short cowboy film by David Lynch, featuring many of his regular actors. It's extremely funny.

THE AMERICAN ASTRONAUT (2001)
A gorgeous black and white musical film that takes the idea of space as the final frontier very seriously.

BUBBA HO-TEP (2002)
A marvelously odd horror film in which an ancient Elvis finds himself battling a cowboy hat-wearing mummy in an East Texas retirement home.

A TOWN CALLED PANIC (2009)
A Belgian animated film starring a plastic toy cowboy, Indian, and horse in which they buy too many bricks and somehow this leads to conflict with a world of gill men that live beneath them.

BIG MONEY RUSTLAS (2010)
The Insane Clown Posses make a Western, and it's just as crude and weird as you might expect. It also has some surprising moments of comic invention.
